Episode 13: Various Texas Murders
Hi,
Here is a post to wrap up the rabbit hole I went down researching murders in the Hidalgo and Cameron Counties in Texas.
Before I get into the other ones let me list them for you in order of when they happened.
Hector Alaniz- April 23, 1988, *
Arnaldo Garza Sr - September 6, 1988- Separate Post*

Benito Garza- March 14, 1993
Hector Alaniz Sr- On April 23, 1988, just after midnight he was murdered behind Alaniz Grocery Store in Edinburg, which was a drive-in grocery store his family-owned and operated. He was shot 4 times in the head and once in the body. I didn’t find any other information other than one article and a memorial his family put in the paper thanking people in the community for their support during this time. I did find that in August of the Same year an Officer was wounded during a robbery attempt at the same store. They did catch that suspect. Also, there was one from 1950 where someone had stolen cheese and crackers from the store which was linked to a string of robberies at the time. a .357 Magnum officers gun.

Nina and Charles McCumber- On December 16, 1988, around 4 pm a couple was confronted by their neighbor who started an argument about the neighborhood conditions. They had been a matter of controversy for months. This ended with Columbus Warren Looper pulling out a .22 Caliber Pistol and shooting Nina several times. Charles ran to their home and was shot, but was able to get ahold of his shotgun and shot Looper, killing him. There was literally only one newspaper article I could find on this. There was nothing else and I search in the year after to see if there was a follow-up. Especially since this one says they weren’t supe if Charles would be charged with anything. I would assume he wasn’t since a neighbor was the one who relayed this account to the police which makes this killing self-defense. The couple was both 67 at the time of this incident. I couldn’t find anything at all on google which I assume is why they were both on the website listed under unsolved cases.
David Sanchez Guerra - On February 18 1989 was found dead in a residence after being shot more than 2 times. He had been missing for at least 3 days prior before he was found by a friend. He was in his early 30s and was also known as Manuel Longoria. I looked with both names and I only found 1 newspaper article on this one and nothing else. The location list of where he was found was listed 4 and a half miles west and 10 and a half north which I think is a strange way to list it.
Juan Jose Marquez- was murdered on June 2, 1989, by Gunshot. I couldn’t find anything at all on him and I looked for different variations of his name.
Laura Guerra- May 23, 1990- Separate Post
Irenino Salinas Alonzo - I found him under Alonzo Trevino Salinas, He was 25 and from Weslaco, Texas. He was found on July 12 1990 beaten and burned. An autopsy determined that he was stabbed 24 times on the left side of his chest and right side of his back. There were also some blunt force trauma to his head and face. After his death, he had been set on fire. He was found about 6 am in the bed of a pickup truck in a field southwest of Donna. I only found one newspaper article on this one and it was under the other name. I’m assuming this is the same person since the dates matched up even though the names a slightly different.
Edgar Ricardo Carrillo - On March 14, 1991, the 29-year-old Mexican national was shot in a drive-by shooting on Highway 107 near Edinburg. The only newspaper article I could find on this one started that they were investigating this murder in connection with an alleged Kidnapping. This came from claims made by Salvador Hermida who was kidnapped from s Sam’s Club and found later that morning chained to a chair in a McAllen residence. While searching the home they found a paper that mentioned Edgar on it. Since there was a kidnapping mentioned as a part of this one I could be linked to the one of Hector Alaniz Sr.

There were also 6 Unknown Murders that I couldn’t find anything on. I only have the dates and locations of where they were found. I’m not sure if they were connected or anything they are just in that time frame.
